Introduction:

I’m excited to share how I turned my neglected, weed infested outdoor space, into a modern Mediterranean backyard retreat! There’s not a lawn in sight, yet I managed to keep a warm, welcoming touch with drought tolerant plants and functional spaces. While being mindful to keeping costs down.

My vision was a mix of Mediterranean tuscan charm, California winery, and a little of desert chic. I spent hours scouring Pinterest to refine the look I had in mind, and I’m thrilled with the result. If you’re curious about the planning and budget that brought this backyard to life, check out my latest post, where I spill all the details.

Designed for a hot climate and drought-conscious practices in mind. This space combines decomposed granite, drought-tolerant plants, a welcoming dinning area, fireplace, and a putting green. Which creates an entertainers modern Mediterranean backyard oasis that’s both beautiful and eco-friendly.

While I love DIY projects and getting hands-on, I opted to enlist the help of a local landscaper for the bulk of the labor-intensive work. The scale of this project was way above my personal capabilities.

After Demo

Retaining Wall:

Due to damage caused by tree roots and the inadequate height of my current retaining wall, The first task is the installation of a new 3-foot-high retaining wall. This upgrade will provide enhanced stability for the large California pink peppercorn trees I have on the sloped portion of my backyard. Ensuring the longevity and integrity of my landscape design.

Herringbone Brick Patio:

For an inviting outdoor setting tailored for entertaining, we installed a brick patio in a classic herringbone pattern. This spacious patio comfortably accommodates a 10-foot table, ideal for seating 8-10 guests. The interlocking bricks create visual interest and define the outdoor seating area, perfect for al fresco dining or lounging with friends and family.

Large Pavers:

In the area where the floating deck meets the brick patio, large 24” x 24” concrete pavers are laid to connect the two surfaces. These oversized pavers not only create a clear pathway but also contribute to the cohesive look and feel of the overall design.

Mediterranean Backyard

Gold Decomposed Granite (gravel):

To complete the Mediterranean aesthetic, I decided to incorporate a Gold stabilized decomposed granite in place of water-thirsty lawns. This unique addition not only offers a stable surface for walking, minimal maintenance, but also elevates the aesthetic appeal of the area. It’s worth noting that while the decomposed granite serves its purpose well, walking on it barefoot can be quite uncomfortable. As much as I adore its look and practicality, I would not recommend for families with young children.

Drought-Tolerant Plants:

I’ve incorporated a variety of drought-tolerant Mediterranean plants. From fragrant rosemary and lavender to ornamental grasses like Mexican grass and deer grass, each plant adds texture and color to the landscape. Additionally, I’ve included potted olive and citrus trees like Meyer lemon and lime. These trees are kept in sizable pots to maintain their size and prevent them from overpowering my backyard design. Not only do they enhance the overall aesthetic of the space, but they also bear fruit, adding a delightful touch to my outdoor retreat.

Slow Drip Irrigation:

The plants are watered using a slow drip irrigation system carefully planned and installed before laying down the decomposed granite. This system conisists of a small tube buried beneath the granite, with tiny holes that release a slow drip of water over an extended period, directly at the plants roots. This method minimizes water waste, making it an eco-friendly solution.

Mediterranean Backyard

Fire Pit:

No backyard oasis is complete without a fire pit. Rather than investing in a pricey gas installed model, I chose to embrace the charm of a traditional wood-burning chiminea with a contemporary twist. This addition not only creates a focal point for gatherings but also adds warmth on chilly evenings. I found the perfect fit for my space at Terrain, and I couldn’t be happier with my choice.

Mediterranean Backyard

Putting Green:

For a fun and functional element, I added a putting green where friends and family can practice their golf skills or enjoy friendly competitions. The synthetic turf requires minimal maintenance and stays green year-round, providing endless entertainment especially for my husband who is an avid golfer.

Water Feature:

To enhance the theme of a mediterranean backyard. I installed a wooden barrel cooling water feature that adds the soothing sound of running water. Surrounded by greenery and drought tolerant plants, the water feature creates a peaceful atmosphere for relaxation and reflection.

Conclusion:

With the transformation of my backyard into a Mediterranean inspired garden, I’ve created a space where beauty and sustainability coexist harmoniously. From the golden decomposed granite to the vibrant array of drought-tolerant plants and inviting features like the fire pit and putting green, my Modern backyard oasis is now a sanctuary for enjoying many fun meaningful evenings with friends and family.
