I’m thrilled to share a project that made my life so much easier – upgrading a portion of my garage into a farmhouse mudroom. I love the idea of having a space where we can transition from the outdoors to the indoors, and combining boho and farmhouse design elements makes it both functional and beautiful. Here’s how I transformed a part of my garage into a cozy and practical farmhouse mudroom.

What is a Mudroom?

Before diving into the details, let’s talk about what is mudroom and why its is a game-changer. A mudroom is a room that serves as a buffer zone between the outside world and your home. It’s a place to store shoes, coats, and bags, keeping the rest of your home clean and organized. Plus, it adds a welcoming touch as you enter your home. For us, turning part of the garage into a farmhouse mudroom meant we could keep dirt and clutter out of the main living areas, and because our house is on the smaller size, this was very much needed upgrade.

Planning the Space

The first step was to plan out the space. I measured the area we wanted to convert and sketched a rough layout. When we purchased the home, it already had garage cabinets installed so I wanted to incorporate some of those cabinets into my design. I also wanted to include practical elements like hooks for coats, a bench for seating, and plenty of storage for shoes, hats and other essentials. My goal was to create a space that’s not only functional but also reflects a boho and modern farmhouse design.

  • Rattan Light Fixture: I Love this rattan light fixture.  It adds a natural, boho touch.
  • Bamboo Plant stand: Including a variety of plants and a stylish plant stand adds a lush boho vibe, bringing natural beauty and a touch of greenery into the space.
  • Open Shelves: Are great for displaying eclectic decor and frequently used cookbooks, adding a personal lived-in feel to the space.

  • Wallpaper: I chose a beautiful, patten wallpaper. This adds color and visual interest and also covers any imperfections on the newly constructed wall.
  • Hooks: Brass hooks provide a practical solution for hanging coats, bags and anything else
  • Farmhouse Decor: incorporating natural wood accents that creates a unique personal style.

Creating the Farmhouse Mudroom

1. Building the Interior Wall

To separate the mudroom from the rest of the garage, I first built a new interior wall. This involved framing the wall with 2x4s, ensuring it was sturdy and properly aligned. Once the frame was up, I installed insulation to help with temperature control and noise reduction.

2. Installing a Interior Garage Door

Safety is always a priority, so I installed a fire-rated interior garage door in the new wall. This type of door is designed to withstand high temperatures, providing an extra layer of protection between the garage and your home. It not only enhances safety but is a requirement of the building code in my state.

3. Adding Drywall and Plaster

With the frame and door in place, I installed fire rated drywall on both sides of the new wall. This was followed by plastering the joints and seams to create a smooth, even surface. After the plaster dried, I sanded it down to ensure it was ready for painting. Adding drywall and plaster was a bit messy and time consuming especially since I was a beginner, but I was determined to have a professional finish. it made a huge difference in making the space feel like a true part of our home.

4. Painting the Wall

Once the drywall was prepped, I painted the new wall with primer and white paint. The fresh coat of paint really helped blend the new wall with the rest of the room, creating a seamless transition.

5. Installing Wallpaper

Next, I installed the wallpaper. This was a fun and relatively easy project that instantly transformed the space. The farmhouse-inspired pattern adds color and interest to the wall, making the farmhouse mudroom feel cohesive with my kitchen cabinets in the same blue color.

6. Adding Storage Solutions

I installed a combination of open shelves and closed cabinets. The open shelves are great for displaying decorative items and storing frequently used items, while the closed cabinets keep everything else out of sight. I also added these wood boxes from Ikea on the shelves for additional storage.

7. Building Mudroom Bench

I built a simple wooden bench with storage underneath. This is where the farmhouse style really shines. The bench is both functional and stylish, providing a place to sit while putting on shoes and additional storage space for baskets or bins.

8. Installing Beadboard, Hooks and Accessories

I installed beadboard paneling above the wood bench including brass hooks for hanging coats, bags, and hats. Above the paneling, I added wood corbel’s and a shelf to add the wood boxes for storage.  These little touches finish the look and bring the farmhouse mudroom style into the space.

Practical Elements for a Functional Farmhouse Mudroom

1. Durable Flooring

Since this area will see a lot of foot traffic, I chose durable, easy-to-clean vinyl flooring which I installed myself. Vinyl or tile are both great options that can withstand dirt and moisture.

2. Storage, Storage, Storage

You can never have too much storage in a mudroom. Baskets, bins, shelves, a second fridge and cabinets all help keep the space organized and clutter-free. Since I use my mudroom as an extended pantry, I built this Kitchen Pantry Cabinet which is perfect to store additional food items, and they reason Why you should DIY Home Projects.

3. Farmhouse Mudroom Bench

A Mudroom bench with storage is a must-have in any mudroom. It provides a place to sit while putting on or taking off shoes and can also double as storage.

4. Hooks and Shoe shelves

Plenty of hooks and shoe shelves for keeping coats, bags, hats and shoes organized and off the floor. Adding an entryway organizer for keys and sunglasses in the mudroom enhances functionality, ensuring these essentials are always within reach before leaving the house. Incorporating a calendar and wooden shopping list pad helps keep the family organized, making it easy to track appointments and jot down needed items.
